Ten business ideas have been selected for participation in a ten-week business accelerator beginning of 16 February. The project is tailor-made to the needs of new tourism companies. It is intended to provide them with professional grounding and to accelerate their progress on the path from the birth of a business idea to the blossoming of a company.

  • Ten teams selected from a total of 94 applicants will receive assistance and support over a ten-week period.
  • Startup Tourism is a collaborative project sponsored by Icelandic Startups, Bláa Lónið, Íslandsbanki, Isavia, Vodafone, and the Icelandic Tourism Cluster Initiative.

A total of 94 business ideas were submitted to Startup Tourism this year. Ten growth companies have been selected to participate in the accelerator, which begins on 16 February. Over a period of ten weeks, leaders of the participant companies will have the opportunity to develop their business ideas further under the mentorship of experienced entrepreneurs, investors, key agents in the tourism sector, and other experts, free of charge.

A request was made for solutions that could expand recreational opportunities in tourism in Iceland, strengthen the sector’s infrastructure, and promote the distribution of tourists around the entire country, year-round.

Sponsors of Startup Tourism are Bláa Lónið, Íslandsbanki, Isavia, and Vodafone. The project is overseen by Icelandic Startups, in collaboration with the Icelandic Tourism Cluster Initiative.

The following business ideas were selected for participation in Startup Tourism in 2017:

    Tailor-made service and entertainment for tourists, in sign language
  3. Ferðasjáin
    A search engine that finds dream trips, based on preferences and special needs
  4. Hælið, safn tilfinninganna
    A centre focusing on the history of tuberculosis at Kristnes in Eyjafjörður
  5. IceYoga
    A yoga adventure travelling around Iceland
  6. Laugarvatnshellar
    Live insight into man-made caves that once served as homes
  7. Regnbogasafnið í Reykjavík
    A unique experience of light and colour, on the borderline between art and science
  8. Sigló Ski Lodge
    Destination and centre for nature lovers in North Iceland
  9. Sólvangur Horse Center
    Unique and diverse experience at a genuine Icelandic horse ranch
